On December 8th 1990, Bernard kicked off the Australian premiere of Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical The Phantom of the Opera in the role of The Auctioneer.
Since then, he has performed many different roles in the production, over more than 30 years (around 2,700 performances), most recently in a new production on Sydney Harbour for Opera Australia in 2022.
As well as The Auctioneer, Bernard has played Giles André, Ubaldo Piangi, Monsieur Réyér, Monsieur Lefèvre, The Jeweller, The Hairdresser, The Fire Chief, The Jester, Tin Soldier, The Flunky and Red Death Double and most of the other male ensemble parts at one time or another. He has been a part of The Phantom in every city in Australia where the show has been performed, as well as in Auckland - New Zealand, Seoul - South Korea (twice), Taipei – Taiwan (twice), Hong Kong (twice), Shanghai, Guangzhou, Beijing, Daegu (South Korea), Manila and Istanbul.

In 1989, Bernard performed the roles of Gus the Theatre Cat, Growl Tiger and Bustopher Jones in the Australia and New Zealand tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical Cats which played in Adelaide, Perth, Newcastle, Brisbane and Auckland.

In 2002, Bernard performed the role of Big Julie in a semi-staged production of Guys and Dolls produced by the Adelaide Festival Centre and the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra.
