Beloved Deutschland

music and lyrics by Bernard Hull

(written for the musical - The Yellow Star - by Graham Anderson. This musical was based on the book "The Hiding Place" by Corrie ten Boom)

Beloved Deutschland, we salute your cause,

Our mighty Fuehrer, with his eagle claws,

The master race! Masters of torture and cruelty.

These women’s faces haunt my dreams at night,

Those evil chambers’ gassy appetite,

Fulfilling quotas, like some expendable commodity,

How can my life go on,

When I am part of this senselessness?

And to add to my shame,

One of these women gave me her forgiveness.

What are my choices in this awful scheme?

Must I continue living out this dream?

I am ashamed, and yet I fear for my family.

These women calmly face death every day,

Where hardened soldiers would just run away,

Yet they forgive me, when I’m the cause of all their misery.
