The Love Duet

music and lyrics by Bernard Hull

Every show must have a great duet,

Where the tenor sings with the soubrette,

With their song they’ll soar to heights above,

Waxing lyrical with words of love.

Who am I to go against tradition?

I’m inclined to give you my permission,

To approach me with your savoir fare,

And to run your fingers through my hair.

As our voices intertwine with airs and graces,

We can’t hide the hopeless grins upon our faces,

Harmony provides us wondrous scintillation,

Even when approaching hyperventilation.

Change the key and we’ll move up a pace,

And the audience will thrill to our embrace,

Up again, this key is quite surprising,

And the temperature is clearly rising.

Just as sure as politicians buy votes,

We pause tastefully on all the high notes,

And just when you think we’ve reached the end,

The orchestra modulates key and starts again.

But this idyllic scene just will not last long,

Although this duet’s clearly not a fast song,

We lovers make our plans as bride and groom,

Oblivious to our impending doom.

For somewhere back behind this love soaked stage,

Within his dressing room and full of rage,

Reclines a baritone, the tenor’s rival,

Conspiring to thwart true love’s survival.

But since the show is only half way through,

We pour contempt on what low voice do,

Our pulses clearly now begin to race,

As we give in to passionate embrace.

And as the song comes to its fitting end,

And we declare our love before our God again,

You’ll find tenutos now in every phrase,

We’ll sing in turn into each other’s gaze,

We promise we will on each other dote,

With each crescendo comes a higher note,

Until the air is thick with fragrant prose,

And lips collide,

And lips collide beneath each panting nose.
